The Franciscan Order does not declare its own members saints. Beatification and canonization are formal recognitions made by the Catholic Church and reserved to the Pope. Over the centuries, however, many Franciscan men and women have been recognized by the Church for lives of extraordinary holiness, service, and witness.
Some Franciscan saints are known throughout the world, including St. Francis of Assisi, St. Clare of Assisi, and St. Anthony of Padua. Others are especially honored within the Franciscan family or remembered in particular countries and communities, such as the Franciscan Martyrs of England and Wales.
